Mick McCorley's Nine Wides

Antrim utility player Mick 'Nine Wides' McCorley kicked an impressive nine wides on April 30th 2006 on Auburns hallowed Princes Park, infamous scene of Brian Deanes 45 yard cracker of a goal from the '05 fixture against Irish Rovers (actual distance of shot is still a talking point among club veterans but Brian insists it was at least 50 yards).

Our on site reporter Jason 'lolly' Lalor takes up the story "well it was a fine day for the gaelic football, we had a 1pm throw in but the result of match was decided before the game even began with the points going to Young Ireland due to a lack of Rovers players actually togging out, conditions were ideal, no wind blowing and a nice bit of cloud cover blocking out the usually intense burning sun from the sky, all in all it was a half forwards dream of a day for landing balls over the black spot.

Things didn't bode well for Mick from the start with him failing to land a ball through the uprights in the pre match warm up and it didn't get any better when he took to the pitch with him kicking three wide's within five minutes of the start,it would probably have been more but for the fact that he failed to see the ball for the next twenty minutes and when he did get possession of the thing with just twenty yards of Sydney Rye grass between him and the sticks he lined up for what should have been his first score of the game but instead he sliced his shot a good 25yards to the right and wide, playing as full forward that day myself and knocking up a tally of one goal and seven points from play i could only try and offer the man words of encouragement but even my best motivational sound bites failed to jolt the man like i knew they could have done on another day and he went on to kick a further five wide's in what should have been a forgettable match for the man,but thanks to the internet and word of mouth hopefully the legend of Mick 'Nine Wide's' McCorely will live on as a reminder to all aspiring young footballers that it can never be as bad as that day in april 2006 when it all went oh so wrong for one of Antrims most talked about gaelic footballers Mick 'Nine Wide's' McCorley".

(Mick conversation might not have actually taken place with Lolly its probably a dramatisation but your performance that day was reported as it took place with no exaggeration to your lack of aim)
